Do you know what a JUUL is?  I certainly didn't.  And I still wish I didn't, however, JUULs are becoming more and more popular, especially among teenagers.  They are also SUPER easy to purchase.  While you are supposed to be 18, there are MANY places near us (711, Power Mart, and more) that have no problem selling to our Vikings.  What is a JUUL you ask?  Take a look at THIS SHORT VIDEO and informational piece about what they are, how addicting they can be, and why our kids may have their hands on them.

Teen vaping is on the rise and, sadly, we are seeing students bring these to school (totally against school rules and illegal for students to have).  These are so bad for our kids and we would love it if they were NEVER sold or given to our kids.  Check out THIS ARTICLE to read about the harmful effects that these are having and how dangerous they are.....

Have you heard of the "Momo Challenge"?  We have recently had students Googling this and had to do a little digging to get more information to share.  Please take a moment to educate yourself on this VERY DISTURBING form of cyberbullying that can show up in apps such as WhatsApp and YouTube (even children's videos) through which they receive threatening messages from the creepy figure that shows up.  Take a moment to watch the video, Google it yourself, and read THIS ARTICLE.

We have had several parents ask for additional resources, outside of GVMS, to support parenting their students.  We are glad you asked!  There are many resources on the Sullivan Inter agency Youth Services Center that can be used, including Parent Project from the FFPD!  Take a look and get signed up!

GVMS will be hosting Heart and Sole this Spring for all girls in 6th-8th grade! Spring Session will begin the week of March 4th and end May 17th.  Girls meet twice a week for 75 minutes after school and finish the session with a 5K run at Solano Community College on May 11th with over 600 other girls, their families and community organizations!  Only 12 GVMS girls can join this team!  Pick up a flyer in our front off and register today at www.gotrnapasolano.org/register-now and help change the world!

Every day at GVMS, we mention being nice/saying kind words/being polite/doing the right thing DAILY to remind our Vikings that we are all here together!  Sometimes, that can be much more difficult than anticipated.  February has been ESPECIALLY hard this school year.  We have been able to use the resources from THIS LINK to help us and wanted to share them with you all as well!

As you can see, our gate is finally installed!  YAY!  The electrical is being put in and all people coming in will have to be buzzed in.  We will continue to monitor all entrances and we can always use more eyes and ears!  We have our amazing campus monitors (and all adults) constantly patrolling our huge site and communicating to all Admin and office when anything goes on.   Can you spare an hour in the morning to join our WATCH D.O.G.S Program?  We truly need people to help us!!

We, at GVMS, do our very best to ensure that our students are safe at all times.  We practice fire drills, intruder drills, review safety protocols and more.   Please talk with your students about where the exit routes are from their classrooms and where to evacuate if necessary.  Should we need to evacuate campus completely, GVMS offsite meeting and pick-up locations are #1: Cordelia Community Park and #2: Cordelia Hills Park (Next to Cordelia Hills)

We continue to be very concerned about the amount of students that are dropped off at school in the morning (sometimes before 7 AM!!) and then choosing to WALK to Power Mart.  This is extremely unsafe and we cannot chase after them to have them return to school.  Please remind your student NOT to do this!

Haven't we ALL tried to figure out how the teenage brain works, especially as our students/children go through middle school?  Is there even an answer to that?!?  Maybe not, however, there are some awesome articles that can help us understand it better.  One that I like is called "Decoding the Teenage Brain in Three Charts".  It's easy to read, helps us shed light on why peers are so important at this age, and possibly helps us (as parents AND educators) navigate our teenagers!  Take a look!

With so much technology and apps out there, it's SO hard to keep up with it!  Take a look at the video or click the link HERE to take a look at the app and what it can do, including creating a fake number to send WHATEVER they want to WHOEVER they want and vice versa.  Additionally, it can hide any activity from parents, even without a cellular plan, they can still make calls and send text.  Take a minute to check it out....

We continue to remind students DAILY of our easy to follow school rules, remind them to keep their hands to themselves, and to be kind.  We do appreciate the reinforcement at home as well!  

We continue to struggle with social skills with many of our students still.  Things like poking someone to get their attention, calling them names to get their attention and throwing things at them to get there attention are ALL behaviors that we see DAILY that we are trying to change.  It's something that has been a HUGE challenge this year.  Please help us reiterate how to be a friend, how to be respectful, and how to follow our school rules!
