February 24, 2017

Thank you for those that joined us at parent conferences this past Thursday! We want your Viking student to be successful!  Please continue to monitor Parent Portal (knowing that our teachers update this as often as possible when not teaching and that late work is always entered last!) so that you can see what your student has/has not turned in.  Also, be sure to log into Google Classroom with your Viking so that they can show you exactly what they are working on.  Almost 100% of our teachers submit all assignments on Google Classroom.  Super easy!  Questions?  Please email!

Parents of 8th grade students!  Please mark these dates down:
*Rodriguez High School freshman registration is THIS COMING Tuesday, February 28 from 5:30-7:30!

*Armijo High School freshman registration is March 1, 2, 8 and 9 from 4:30-7:30 PM!

What ARE A-G requirements you ask?  What does this mean for my Viking? Glad you asked!  A-G requirements for CSU and UC systems for college are described above.  Check out THIS LINK for more information!  We have also put a short presentation together that we share with our 8th graders too!

Many of our teachers are getting even more creative and working to bring state of the art technology and hands on learning for our students!  Check out what they are doing AND see if you can support!  It's a great time to be a Viking!

Official progress reports will be mailed THIS FRIDAY and it's a SNAP SHOT of where your student is performing.  DON'T PANIC!  There is still time to bring up grades if they are not where your Viking wants to be before official report cards are done in June for transcripts.

PLEASE be sure that you are checking Parent Portal, teacher websites, and Google Classroom for ALL work!  Want some out of the box ideas?  Check out THIS WEBSITE for extra ideas and helpful hints to work with your teenager!!

Parent conferences are coming February 23 from 3-5 PM in our gym (7th/8th) and cafeteria (6th).  Personal invites HAVE BEEN sent through US Post Office to those that we are asking to attend.  If you do not receive an invite, your student does not need a conference at this time.

We strive to teach and reinforce character traits and positive behaviors on a daily basis!  We follow three basic school rules: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible.  We need your help at home to reinforce these positive traits! Check out THIS ARTICLE for tips on ways to use the media to bolster positive character strengths at home.

Thank you to those fathers that have come to GVMS on your own time to hang out with our kids!  We still have several that have not picked up their badges and shirts!  If you are interested in being a part of Watch D.O.G.S., please email HERE!
Friday, Feb 10 Nelda Mundy Elementary is having a Watch D.O.G.S. meeting and has included GVMS!  Please join us in room 707 for free pizza and active shooter info as well as a brief presentation on bullying and how school volunteers can help resolve situations!

Many of our students are still REALLY struggling with math facts.  Our students should be able to complete 50 facts per minute by 5th grade.  This number can vary, however, the more students practice, the better they remember their facts. Not knowing math facts makes it VERY hard to complete any other multi-step math problem.  Check out some of these websites (Thanks Mrs. Laffey!) to help your Viking practice!
