I am SURE you have heard of Instagram, have an Instagram account, or your Viking has an Instagram account.  Did you know that 1 out of every 3 teens have Instagram?  While it can be an awesome way to connect with friends and family, there are some things that parents MUST be aware of!!
  • Empower your students to be aware of online threats
  • Be sure to monitor your student's activity on Instagram
  • Make your student the expert and have them "teach" you
Check out this easy read for some tips to stay on top of your student's Instagram account!

Any parent/guardian/family member wonder why your sweet middle school student has turned into someone you may not always recognize?  There are real and scientific reasons, so don't panic and there is good news.  Take a look at THIS ARTICLE from Parent Tool Kit on what's going on in their brains, how it WILL get better and ways that you can support them through this transition!

As you already know, our students are completing the MAP testing in English and Math.  While we may have had a few technical difficulties, we are plugging away at it!
MAP is a computer adaptive test and shows a student's growth over time (which is why our students take it three times a year!) and it is indicative of how they will perform on the CAASPP test at the end of April.
Teachers will each get reports on every single student as to how they are progressing!
MAP is important and we will be celebrating the growth of our students as soon as they have completed all parts!  Want a more in depth look?  Take a look at THIS ARTICLE so that you can have a better understanding.
Also, check out the MAP Parent Toolkit website to answer some more questions you may have!

Every day, over our loud speakers, we make lots of announcements to our students.  These include: events coming up, clubs to join, sports activities, grading windows, and more.  PLEASE make sure that you all, at home, bookmark this page HERE so that YOU don't miss out on what's happening at GVMS!  We have a LOT of exciting activities coming up that you won't want your student (or YOU!) to miss out on!

Please don't forget that report cards are located ON LINE via Aeries/Parent Portal!  If you still don't have your log in, please ask your student as we got EVERY single student logged on at GVMS!  That's a RECORD!!

I am SURE you have heard about TikTok, if not witnessed your student dancing to short (15 seconds) portions of a song.  Many tweens and teens are obsessed with making these short music videos!  Some of them are super entertaining, for sure!
There are, however, some things we want all parents to be aware of.  Anyone can have followers (young students can have adults followers, etc), it can show people/students/children being picked on our bullied,  and A LOT of the videos have foul language and adult content.  So what can parents do about it (check out the video too!)?
  • Know your child's user name and password
  • Keep the dialogue open about what videos they are posting and watching
  • Remind them that they are creating and adding to their own digital footprint and that ANYONE (parents, coaching, college admission counselors, future employers) can see what they post.

We know that all parents want what's best for our children and that includes raising a good digital human.  Many of our students feel that they are "invincible" behind the screen of their phones and do not truly realize that everything they put out on any form of social media is part of their digital footprint.  The good, the bad and the ugly.  So how do we, as adults still navigating our own way through this digital time, support and teach our students to be very aware that what they throw out there has a LASTING effect?  Take a look at THIS ARTICLE for ways to work with your Viking!
